Your height is both within and outside your control. Here are some of the factors that influence a person’s height, some of which you can change with effort, while others are not modifiable no matter how much you try.

Genetic factors

The characteristics expressed in human genes are beyond anyone’s control. Like all other physical attributes, a person’s height is governed by genes. However, if both the mother and the father are short, then it does not mean that all the children they will have will have the same stature. Some of the children might end up tall. This is because height is one of the human attributes that is dictated by many genes.

Gestational factors

While the fetus is developing inside the mother’s womb, it receives all the nutrients from the food that the mother eats, and its development is also influenced by the mother’s activities. Poor nutrition in the womb could lead to stunted growth in post-natal development. Intake of certain medications may also have dire effects, not only on the baby’s growth but in the formation of organs and other body structures. Meanwhile, some studies reveal that smoking during pregnancy is associated with short stature. Similarly, babies and children who are sickly while growing up and take in different types of medications may not reach the optimal height dictated by their genes because of the stresses imposed on the body.

Hormonal influence

The rate of growth of human bones, cartilages, tendons, muscles, and other parts is directly influenced by HGH or Human Growth Hormone, which is secreted by the pituitary, a pea-sized organ deep within the brain. Human Growth Hormone is secreted during sleep. Doctors’ advice for children to take naps in the afternoon and get as much as eight hours of sleep at night is partly based on the influence of sleep on HGH secretion.


One of the easiest means of increasing height is to correct stooped posturing. Straightening the spine and maintaining good alignment of the head, neck, and body adds a few essential inches to one’s height. A person who maintains a crooked or slouched posture from childhood might have great difficulty in changing his or her attitude. Maintaining a stooped posture while sitting, standing and walking may eventually lead to changes in the muscles and connective tissues. Some of the structures are lengthened and weakened, while others become shortened and tight. Correcting one’s posture may be difficult, but it is not impossible. For success in this endeavor, stretching of tight muscles must be performed, as well as strengthening of the weak muscles. Endurance exercises must be added to the repertoire. Good posture not only increases one’s height, but boosts a person’s self-esteem and confidence, too.

Good nutrition

The importance of good nutrition cannot be stressed enough especially during the formative years. The body utilizes essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to build bones, connective tissue, and muscles. Unless a child enjoys balanced meals everyday, he or she is unlikely to reach optimal height. Some of the most essential nutrients for growth are carbohydrates, proteins, calcium, zinc, and Vitamin D.

10 Questions on Healing With Herbs

I am a herbalist, and I am passionate about health, and healing. There are so many ways that we can heal ourselves, and maintain a healthy body, mind and soul. One of my favourite healing modalities, is using herbs for myself, and my family.

1) What is an herb?

There seem to be various definitions, as to what an herb actually is. From what I can gather, so to speak: An herb is a plant that is generally fleshy, and seed bearing. It does not have a woody stem. But, I must admit that I have found it difficult to find a definition, as when I think of herbal remedies, they include so much more than this, and many of them include various parts of trees, vines, flowers etc.

2) What is an herbalist?

An Herbalist is someone who has studied the healing properties of herbs, and how to heal people, and animals with them. Herbalists educate people, on how to use herbs to promote health, prevent illness, and to cure ailments. Our primary focus is to treat the whole person, and to advise them on their diet and lifestyle, rather than focusing on only treating their ailments.

3) How can an herbal tea heal me?

An herbal tea, is just as therapeutic as eating an herb. One can either brew fresh, or dried herbs in hot water, and the healing properties are drawn into the water. These teas are generally pleasant tasting. It is preferable to see a qualified herbalist, or do research as to what herbs are good for treating which ailments. Be sure, if drinking ready mixed teas, that they do not have any preservatives, sugar or artificial additives. When drinking herbal teas, one can always add a little honey to make it more palatable. Let the tea brew for at least 10 minutes, and then always strain before drinking.

4) What herbs can be used for healing?

There is such a large variety of herbs, that one can use, but the most common are generally the ones available to each area. We use loads of lavender, chamomile and basil. The success of herbal remedies, depends largely, on how the person reacts to the remedies. We are all different, and, it can sometimes take a little experimenting to find the right remedy. Other popular healing herbs that are also easy to grow are: echinacea, eucalyptus, garlic, rosemary, sage and thyme.

5) What is a poultice?

A poultice is an age old way to heal with herbs, and is also probably the safest method. It is made with a fine paste of herbs, mixed with clay, salt or charcoal to activate it. The paste is then wrapped in a cloth, which is placed on the skin, in the area that needs treatment. They are especially effective for skin disorders or chest complaints.

6) What is a Tincture?

A tincture is a liquid extract made from herbs, which is taken orally. They are usually extracted in alcohol, but cider vinegar can also be used. I prefer to purchase rather than make my own tinctures, as there are some top quality ones made these days. This way one also get to take a more accurate dosage. They are most convenient and easy to use.

7) How safe are herbs?

Not all herbs are safe to digest, or even to use as poultices, so I would warn against using just anything, without doing your research. Not all herbs are healing, and many of them have side effects. So, as with all medication, we need to inform ourselves on each herb, before using it. Some toxic herbs include, bloodroot, bryony, clematis, foxglove, poison ivy and laburnum.

8) Dried/ fresh?

Depends mainly on availability. I generally prefer to use fresh. But, if I don’t have a particular herb, or cannot find fresh ones, then I use dried herbs, or teas. If they are freshly dried, and kept in the correct conditions, than they will still have loads of therapeutic properties.

9) Where can one obtain herbs from?

We have an herb garden in our back yard, and we try to keep as many herbs planted as possible. It does not require a lot of space, as each herb is contained in a smallish container. I generally beg, or buy as many assorted herbs as I can lay my hands on. Even if you live in an apartment, with no garden, you can grow your own herbs. They look beautiful, and they will always be freshly available on hand to use for remedies, or to cook with.

10) Herbs or Spices?

I find that many “herbal” remedies, actually have spices fruits, and other ingredients in them. As long as they are natural, and healing, I am happy to add these to my ingredients. Cinnamon, tumeric and cloves are a few of the spices that I use for remedies on an ongoing basis. Lemon juice, epsom salts and cider vinegar, is also extremely popular.

This may seem like an obvious one, but a lot of people neglect how important this childhood lesson is. Twenty seconds of hand washing is all you need to prevent all sorts of nasty ailment. 9) Rest in Child’s Pose

Change Your Ecology, Change Your Body

Most of us have likely tried to release weight by restricting our eating in one way or another. Perhaps you’ve reduced calories, cut carbs, or exercised like a fiend.

The challenge with this approach is that it can often make you feel as though you’re walking a tightrope, always teetering on the edge of failure. What if you changed your ecology? And by ecology, I mean the environment both within your body and in which you live.

Just as you’ve likely known someone who’s gained weight by taking prescription medication, our bodies are similarly impacted by our daily ingestion of toxic chemicals. This chemical overload in our body disrupts our endocrine system and can keep us from releasing weight, despite diet and exercise. Even today, you can begin to reduce your chemical overload by choosing a natural, paraben free lotion (as it’s used on the largest organ of the body) and getting a list of the “Dirty Dozen,” a list of the most contaminated fruits and veggies (so that you can, at least, purchase these items organic).

Change your thoughts – Worrying or feeling guilty — about your job, your finances, your children, your love life, your weight, what you look like when you walk past a store window or mirror — is all it takes. Cortisol doesn’t discriminate. You feel the stress and the stress hormone, cortisol, kicks in. Over time, when you have enough cortisol in your system it slows your metabolism, drains your energy and optimism, and cranks up your hunger. So what can you do starting today? Stop in front of your mirror, look deeply into your eyes and feel love and self-acceptance, feel how fabulous you are, how extraordinary… simply because you’re breathing; breathing is all you need to do to be worthy. Let go of the rest.

Acknowledge your needs and wants and align your life accordingly – How YOU doin’? Are you actually living your life the way you always imagined? Do you want to be more adventurous? Do you long for more romance? Do you want to ask for a promotion? Do you want to speak more kindly with others? Do you want to drive less? What do you want? What do you need? Do you even know? Have you been moving to the beat of everyone else’s drum for so long, you forgot the rhythm that truly resonates with you? As you may already know, you tend to overeat (or abuse anything, really), when your needs, wants and emotions go unacknowledged and unfulfilled. While not everything you want needs to be realized, simply standing in your truth can be powerful in its ability to mitigate emotional eating. Ooh, and if you go further? If you actually take the time to start reaching for what you want, to start creating a life that aligns with what you want and need, with who you really are, food simply becomes… food.

5 Rules for a Healthier Life

1. Eat Real Food. Not too much. Mostly Vegetables.

If you hunt and fish, try to get most of your protein from these sources.

If you buy meat from the store, I suggest buying natural, hormone and antibiotic free meats.

When grocery shopping, ask yourself, “Can I grow this?” and “Can I kill this?” If the answer is, no, try your hardest to avoid putting it into your cart. Try to focus on the long term consequences of consuming the food before selecting it.

Following this rule will keep you away from all the processed junk that is out there.

2. Make your Home a Healthy Place.

If you know it isn’t healthy, do not have it in your home. It’s okay to splurge on junk food a couple times per month, but if it isn’t in your house, the inconvenience for you to go out and get it will drastically reduce the number of unhealthy calories you consume.

3. Develop a Support System.

Develop a relationship with an individual or join a group of people that you can talk to about your goals. Having a support system will help keep you honest to your goals and keep you motivated to reach them.

4. Be Active at least 30 Minutes a Day, Seven Days a Week.

Increase your activity if you are having trouble reaching your goals.

5. Create S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Make sure that you make S.M.A.R.T. goals and stick with them. If you’re setting goals that are not realistic, you will most likely fail to reach them and get discouraged. Start small and work your way up.

Find ways to reach your goals that are fun. If you are a social person, find a workout buddy. If you enjoy competition and games, join a recreational sports team. There are many different things you can do to make exercising and eating healthy more fun. Use your imagination!

These rules are very simple, but they are not as easy to follow as they may seem. I suggest gradually implementing these rules into your lifestyle so you stick with them your entire life. I have been a personal trainer for 5 years, and I have owned my own personal training business for 3 of those years. I promise you that if you follow these five rules, you will be successful at reaching your fitness goals. You will become more fit and healthy than you have ever been in you life!

When our children are thankfully well, we often neglect the fact that annual check-ups are recommended by their doctors. Why? Because they may be expensive or inconvenient when everyone is overwhelmed with busy schedules. However, these are not good reasons to ignore making an appointment. Check-ups are a vital part of every child health care regimen.

Assessing Overall Health

Regular check-ups are crucial for evaluating a child’s overall health. If you only bring your child to the doctor when they are ill, you may miss out on crucial signs of a potential problem. Check-ups track whether your child’s growth pattern is off, or if they gained or lost weight suddenly. There may even be other child health care concerns that can only be detected through routine blood and urine testing.

Due to the fact that visits are recorded in the doctor’s charts, an astute physician will immediately notice if there is something wrong.
